What are the organic certifications in Taiwan?

In the more than ten years since Taiwan’s implementation of the "Agricultural Production and Certification Act" in 2007 to the current "Organic Agriculture Promotion Act", more than ten organic verification agencies have also developed, each with a different verification label. Can "organic" guarantee food safety or health?

The spirit of organic products lies in environmental sustainability and friendly use, and is not directly related to food safety or health. What is organic product?

Any agricultural product that is produced, processed, packaged and distributed in accordance with the certification standard established by the Central Competent Authority and certified under this Act, or any imported agricultural product approved in accordance with Organic Agriculture Promotion Act.

 

What are the definition and verification specifications of "organic"?

"Organic" has slightly different certifications and standards in various countries, but its basic spirit is still based on the principles of ecological equilibrium and nutrient recycling. It does not use chemical fertilizers and chemical pesticides, and does not use genetically modified organisms and their products to production of agricultural products such as forests, aquatic products, and livestock.

In addition to Taiwan’s local organic agricultural products, imported organic agricultural products from different countries commonly available on the market can also be distinguished from the labels below: the United States, Canada, the European Union, China and Japan:

         

Can organic agricultural products in various countries or regions circulate with each other?

At present, there is no consistent international standard for organic products, so it is not unimpeded to circulate in the name of organic between various countries and regions. Taiwan has only signed organic equivalence agreements with five countries from May 30, 2020 to now, and can recognize each other as organic products, so we can see organic products from these countries on the market.

Are "Eco-friendly Farming'' and "Traceable Agricultural Product" equal to organic?

"Eco-friendly Farming" and "organic" are essentially the same. The biggest difference is that the former has not been certified organic, so it cannot be sold on the market under the name of organic.

The spirit of "Traceable Agricultural Products" is to pay attention to the detailed records and verification of products from production to the circulation market, making the overall supply chain transparent, tracking and tracing, and promoting food safety. Products can also use legal pesticides and fertilizers in accordance with regulations. It focuses on different categories from "Organic".
